iPod terminonligy guide for dummies:

Jailbreak

“Jailbreaking justifies buying the expensive iPod touch. It fully utilizes the device and adds useful applications (Scientific Calculators, Dictionaries, etc.) along with fun ones (Games, NES, etc.).

Jailbreaking allows you to install applications on your iPod that were not necessarily made by Apple.

There are risks/rewards associated with jailbreaking, see below for more info.

Other important jailreaking information:
Jailbreaking is legal
Jailbreaking does void the warranty on your iPod.
You can still use all aspects of iTunes with your iPod.
Your iPod can ALWAYS be restored and your warranty will no longer be void.
Jailbreaking cannot permanately damage your iPod, again you can always restore.

SSH

Secure Shell or SSH is a network protocol that allows data to be exchanged over a secure channel between two computers.

With your iPod SSH allows FTP to function properly and access your files.

SSH is not nessary for jailbreaking, but it is necessary if you want to access files within your iPod.

FTP

FTP or File Transfer Protocol is used to transfer data from one computer to another over the Internet, or through a network.

This is how you can manually exchange files with your iPod.

FTP is not necessary for jailbreaking.

In order to use FTP you need an FTP client. Popular FTP clients are Winscp, and CuteFTP. Do a Google search to find downloads.

Applications

A quick explination of applications and their relationship the the iPod Touch.

Applications (Apps for short) are pieces of software that allow the device to perform a certain action.

On the iPod Touch the applications that come installed “out-of-the-box” are; Safari, YouTube, Calendar, Contacts, Clock, Settings, Music, Videos, Photos, and iTunes.
